Why can’t fog lights be used as everyday driving lights? Let’s first take a look at the comparison chart below. These two images were taken by me on a particularly foggy night. As you can clearly see, there’s a noticeable difference in the illumination effects between fog lights and low-beam headlights.
The differences between fog lights and low-beam headlights lie in aspects such as the angle of illumination, brightness, and the ability of the light source to penetrate fog. In all these respects, fog lights are superior to low-beam headlights.
The purpose of low-beam headlights is to illuminate a certain area directly in front of the vehicle. The angle of illumination is below the horizontal line, and the bulbs have relatively low wattage, so they won't interfere with drivers of other vehicles.
However, in heavy fog, low-beam headlights—with their limited penetrating power—quickly become ineffective. That’s when fog lights come into play, compensating for the low-beam headlights’ inability to penetrate heavy rain and dense fog. Therefore, fog lights should be used only as emergency lighting tools under adverse weather conditions and should not be used as everyday lighting fixtures.
To give everyone a more intuitive sense of the issue, I chose a night with nice weather and used the dashcam in my own car to capture some footage of vehicles using their fog lights improperly. Let’s take a look at just how dazzling the front and rear fog lights can be in an environment with high visibility:
According to footage captured by the dashcam, the brightness of fog lights is significantly higher than that of ordinary car headlights. Moreover, when observed with the naked eye, their glare is even more intense than what’s shown in the video recording. If a driver’s eyes are exposed to fog light for an extended period, they can easily experience dizziness and disorientation—hence the nickname “eye-destroying weapon”...
